Move Over Snickers - Marathon Is Back

marathon barRemember the trusty Marathon chocolate bar? Of course you do …if you can remember back to 1990! Back then, the manufacturer Mars decided to rebrand Marathon as Snickers to bring it inline with it’s global operation.

Snickers is the best selling chocolate bar of all time with annual sales around the world of £1 billion …that’s a lot of chocolate and peanuts!

Apparently the marathon name has been re-registered as a UK trademark and the company is to use the original name for a three month trial. I never did care much for the snickers name but how about you, what do you prefer?

Sky Goes Black For Willy

Willie Harcourt-Cooze is the charismatic man behind the Venezuelan Black chocolate company and we’ve blogged about him before.

Well, in a latest twist in the tail The Telegraph reports that Willies success has attracted the attention of Hugo Chavez - President of Venezuela. Chavez has reportedly demanded an investigation into the activities of our Willie. There are accusations that he is not paying the appropriate prices for his cacao. And as nationalisations have become common-place under the ruling Chavez, Willies activities are now under the microscope.

I wonder what will happen? What are your thoughts?

Oorain Chocolate Sweetened With Maple Sugar

Yesterdays Sunday Telegraph gave a little mention to the Oorain brand of chocolate. Apparently they are discs of high quality chocolate that are sweetened with maple sugar. Oorain are a French company and if your French is better than mine you can read more about the company here. The chocolate includes these flavours:

  • milk
  • salt caramel
  • chilli pepper
  • mint
  • bitter chocolate

In the UK you can buy the product at Whole Foods Market - looks like an American company to me.

The Chocolate Boutique Hotel

chocolate boutique hotelThis fine looking building is based in Bournemouth and is now The Chocolate Boutique Hotel

This listed, 19th century Italianate villa now hosts chocolate making weekends and cookery schools. On the last weekend of each month you could learn how to cook with chocolate with chocolatier Allan Collier, formerly patisserie chef at The Ritz.

Allan was pictured in a Telegraph article about the hotel and the chocolate wearing a Nisbets tunic - a retailer we partner with over on our chef uniforms site. Mr Collier (or one of his trainees) will show how to make a ganache (creame poured over chopped, dark chocolate) and how to make fillings for moulded chocolates.

Has anybody been or booked to go ?

Cadbury Creme Eggs - Mini

I’ve just scoffed a packet of mini Creme eggs - although I did let my wife have a couple too!

Mini Creme Eggs

I enjoy these better than a standard size Creme Egg - must have something to do with the fact that you can eat a few of the mini ones but I’d never dream of eating more than one normal size one in one go! Think you get about 7 in a packet. Inside they’re the same as Daddy Creme Egg:

Mini Creme Eggs

Sorry about the focus being out on that photo - must have overdone it on the chocolate!

How about you. Standard or mini egg?

M&S Organic Chocolates

We’ve forgotten about a Christmas present that we had received - a box of Marks and Spencers organic chocolates:
M&S Organic Chocolates

As the shells were nice and thick these chocolates had quite a chunky feel to them. Although they were organic I wouldn’t say that I could tell at all. Would certainly try again!

Anyone else tried them - what did you think?
